After discussions between the government and race promoters, Formula One organizers said this year’s Japanese Grand Prix is cancelled. The race scheduled for October 10 in Suzuka was supposed to be between the events in Turkey and the United States. Formula One said, “The decision has been taken by the Japanese government to cancel the race this season due to ongoing complexities of the pandemic in the country.”

Formula One will have to revise this year’s calendar and “will announce the final details in the coming weeks.” This adds to the cancellation of Asia-based races as both Australia and Singapore Grand Prix have been canceled. There is also an indefinite postponement of the Chinese Grand Prix located in Shanghai. The 2020 season was already delayed due to the pandemic as they didn’t start until July. The schedule was compressed to 17-races through December.

In a statement, F1 explained, “Formula 1 has proven this year, and in 2020, that we can adapt and find solutions to the ongoing uncertainties and is excited by the level of interest from locations to host Formula 1 events this year and beyond.” Most of the races this year will be staged in Europe and the Middle East.
