Nicholas-Guy Turbide from Canada swam to a silver medal in the S13 100-metre backstroke final at the Paralympic Games. Raised in Quebec City, the 24-year-old placed second with an impressive time of 59.70 seconds. Ihar Boki of Belarus took the gold medal with a world and Paralympic record of 56.36 seconds.

The bronze medal went to Vladimir Sotnikov of the Russian Paralympic Committee. Turbide made his Paralympic debut in 2016 and won the bronze medal, he claimed a silver medal at the 2019 world champions for 100-metre backstroke. He also won his qualifying heat in one minute 1.08 seconds.

Turbide was born with impaired vision and he once said his eyes are like “a camera that does not have a zoom.” He explained that he had fear of water but only practiced it as a backup if his golf career didn’t take off. Turbide said his love for competition outweighed his fear of water. His next race will be the 50-metre freestyle in Tokyo.
