COVID-19 cases drastically rise as the more contagious Delta variants impact all age groups in the U.S. Specifically, Americans ages 11 or younger who cannot receive a vaccination have been significantly affected. Over 500,000 children across the U.S. have tested positive for the virus from August 5 to August 26, according to data from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
203,962 of those cases were reported in the week of August 19 to August 26. In comparison, around late June one weekly report displayed numbers around 8,500. This created concerns about the safety of allowing children to return to in-person learning at school. A CNN medical analyst Dr. Jonathon Reiner said “The virus is raging in all these children who are unvaccinated, which is why schools mask mandates are sol important.”
More and more states and school districts are starting to impose maks and vaccine mandates and some are trying to limit the virus’s exposure among the unvaccinated. Ney York Governor Kathy Hochul said they would implement mandatory weekly testing for COVID-19 in any state school staff who are unvaccinated. Teens aged 12 and up are encouraged to get vaccinated to curb the spread of the virus.
