Chicken wings have served as a pandemic comfort food for many and now the prices are rising even higher. As the price of poultry, chicken feed, and canola oil increase, restaurants are saying it is more expensive to serve them. Variations of international shipping laws also played a role in this pub favourite dish becoming more expensive.
With restaurants reopening, it created a higher demand for chicken, and many businesses rushed to get enough supply. The Canadian chicken industry has been improving, with the sector expecting to increase the availability of the chicken wing. Livestock market analyst Kevin Grier said, “I have been predicting or expecting that wing prices would be declining for about the last … six to 12 months, and they keep on going higher.”
The rise in wing prices highlights the hurdles placed by pandemic on the food industry and supply chains. Rob Dobrowolski, owner of Bonzzini’s Brew Pub in Regina asked “Can you imagine what a wing night on Tuesday is going to be like with no wings?” He later added that his suppliers don’t have any wings until December. Dobrowolski claims the price of his last order is up 20 per cent and the price can rise even higher.
