The 19-year-old from Canada, Leylah Fernandez, is headed to the U.S. Open Final to face Britain’s Emma Raducanu. The British athlete is only 18-years-old and it will be their 1st career major final. Fernandez is from Laval, Quebec, and despite the slow start on Thursday’s semi-finals match, she advanced to the finals.
Fernandez defeated Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus 7-6(3). 4-6, 6-4 solidifying her first-ever grand slam title. The match started rough for her as she was struggling to make contact with her opponent’s powerful and accurate serves. But after she took the 4-2 lead in the third set, the momentum started shifting her way.
After the match, Fernandez explained that the U.S. Open experience “has helped me not only to believe in my game, but it also has helped to open my eyes that I have no limit to my potential,… I can go three sets against these top players, I can play against these top players, and I can win against these top players.”
The last lady to win the U.S. Open women’s title was Canada’s Bianca Adreescu back in 2019. Fernandez will try to be the second Canadian to win this title her opponent Sabalenka said “Now, Fernandez is, like, a top-10 player, and we’ll see how good she will be in the future.”
