According to the European Union agency, the hole in the ozone over Antarctica has grown even larger over the past week. Scientists explained that the Southern Hemisphere ozone hole is already bigger than the size of Antarctica. The European Union use a tool known as the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service to track the ozone hole and more.
It said Thursday that the ozone hole appears every year during the Southern Hemisphere spring. They noticed it has grown considerably in the past week after an average start. Vincent-Henri Peuch, head of the EU’s monitoring service said “Forecasts show this year’s hole evolved into a rather larger than usual one,… We are looking at a quite big potentially also deep ozone hole.”
The atmospheric ozone absorbs the sun’s ultraviolet light which protects life on Earth from deadly high-energy radiation. Peuch added that last year’s ozone hole turned out to be the longest-lasting ones ever recorded. In 1987 the Montreal Protocol was signed, banning certain chemicals that were thought to worsen the ozone hole.
