Manny Pacquiao, the Philippine boxing icon and senator said he would be running for president in the 2022 elections. He was nominated by his PDP-Laban party and he accepted it on Sunday at its national convention. Pacquiao is the president of the PDP-Laban faction which is also led by Sen. Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III.

In a speech, Pacquiao said “I am a fighter, and I will always be a fighter inside and outside the ring,… We need the government to serve our people with integrity, compassion, and transparency.” A different faction of the same party nominated President Rodrigo Duterte to be its vice-presidential candidate. Duterte’s former aide, Sen. Bong Go, will be their presidential nominee.

Duterte is forbidden by the constitution from obtaining a second six-year term, accepted his nomination, but Go declined to run for president. Pacquiao has accused the administration of Duterte of making corruption worse in the Philippines. This is after Duterte led a violent campaign against illegal drugs.
