Some polling stations across Toronto’s downtown core are experiencing long lineups as the number of voting venues were decreased due to the pandemic. More than 10 GTA ridings, including the ones of Toronto Centre, Spadina-Fort York, and University-Rosedale, have more than 50 per cent reduction in the total number of polling stations compared to 2019.
In the Toronto Centre, there are only 15 polling stations for this year’s election, compared to 91 stations in the last election. Certain stations saw lines forming before people could even cast their ballots at 9:30 a.m. A spokesperson for Elections Canada said to be “patient” because “We know that one of the most popular times to vote is just after dinner so if you can avoid that time then that would help and might make your time at the polling station go more quickly,”
He explained to “Be patient. It is an unusual election. We are in the midst of a pandemic. Things are going different this year than they have been in the past and we just want everyone to contribute to making this as healthy and safe as possible.” There will be precautions and restrictions to ensure voters are safe when entering the polling locations.
