After 39 miners were trapped underground at a mine in Northern Ontario, 33 have climbed out, and the remaining are expected to come out by midday. The workers were trapped in Totten Mine near Sudbury on Sunday afternoon. They were trapped because an accident damaged the elevator, that carries them in and out of the mine.
The mining company Vale stated Monday night that it was “relieved and delighted to see the individuals returning to the surface safe and sound.” Danica Pagnutti, a spokesman for Vale spoke to one of the miners, and “he was in good spirits and happy to have some pizza to take home and just looking forward to getting home to his family and relaxing, but generally in good spirits.”
Ontario Mine Rescue said it expects every miner to be out of the mine by 11 a.m. Tuesday morning. The elevator takes the workers down roughly 1,200 metres down and the workers had to climb a series of ladders to get back. Ontario Mine Rescue explained that some workers unable to climb may be hoisted using ropes.
