As the colder weather approaches, it means more time spent indoors with the possibility for increased viral transmission. With the Delta variant being more transmissible than last year’s virus, some Canadians may wonder how this pandemic will look over the next few months. Certain epidemiologists and infectious disease specialists are expressing caution but optimism that greater immune responses may contain the variant.
Epidemiologist Raywat Deonandan, an associate professor at the University of Ottawa said “I’m always optimistic, and here’s why,… Pandemics have a beginning, middle, and end. And where are we right now? Locally, I think we’re near the end.” Another epidemiologist Caroline Colijin said Canada is heading into a “challenging fall”.
Colijn explained that “The delta variant is much more infectious than the COVID that we had around last fall and even last spring,” Alberta and Saskatchewan are currently in a crisis mode, as COVID-19 hospitalizations have overloaded their healthcare systems.
