Next week, select Ontario schools with a higher risk of closure due to COVID-19 will begin rapid antigen testing students and staff. Ontario’s chief medical officer of health explained after reviewing data “over the last couple of weeks” that he changed his mind about the value of the test for unvaccinated asymptomatic students.

The program will start next week and local public health units will deploy rapid antigen test kits to schools that are “high risk” for COVID-19 exposure. The kits may also be deployed if there is an outbreak, the prevalence of the virus is surrounding a community or a combination of all three.

Dr. Kieran Moore said, “And if all of those boxes are getting ticked, and it’s the judgment of the medical officer health that we should have rapid antigen testing in play as a tool in the tool chest to keep them open, they will receive the testing at the school level, in partnership with the school board, as well as the medical officer of health.”
