The Ontario government officially announced that it will increase the minimum wage to $15 per hour next year. The announcement was made by Premier Doug Ford on Tuesday morning in Milton. He spoke alongside the Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development Monte McNaughton and Minister of Finance Peter Bethlenfalvy.
Currently, the minimum wage in Ontario is $14.35 per hour and the increase will come into effect on January 1. The government said the minimum wage will then rise by the rate of inflation following January 1, 2022. Ford spoke in Milton that “for many Ontarians wages haven’t kept up with the increasing cost of living, making it harder than ever to make ends meet,”
He further explained “I’ve always said, workers deserve to have more money in their pockets because they have worked hard and put in long hours. The least the government can do is ensure we’re making life affordable to them.” The bump in pay will also apply to liquor servers who are currently making $12.55 per hour.
