Four astronauts arrived at the International Space Station in a SpaceX capsule and will stay there until spring. The total trip took 21 hours from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center to the space station. The crew of four consisted of one German and three U.S. astronauts said it was “a pretty glorious sight,” when spotting the station from a distance.

German astronaut Matthias Maurer described the image as “floating in space and shining like a diamond,… We’re all very thrilled, very excited.” The Dragon capsule led by commander Raja Chari was fully automated so the astronauts just had to watch. Both Chari and pilot Tom Marshburn were monitoring the capsule systems, ready to take control if necessary.

SpaceX mission control said the capsule docked 423 kilometres above the eastern Caribbean. NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei welcomed the newcomers and said “I can’t tell you how happy I am to see these smiling faces,… Every one of us, all seven of us, are friends, and we’re going to become even better friends as time goes on.”
