Canada’s largest solar panel project in southern Alberta is expected to create 1,000 jobs at the peak of its construction. This is all according to Dan Balaban the co-founder and CEO of Calgary-based Greengate which is planning the project. The project has been funded by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and will be roughly the size of 1,600 football fields.

Including more than one million solar panels, the project is expected to produce enough power to provide electricity for 150,000 homes. The solar farm is called Travers Solar and is expected to be completed by the end of 2022. According to Balaban, southern Alberta gets more than 300 days of sunshine per year.

Balaban said “it’s extremely important that we find other areas to diversify the economy,… We’ve got phenomenal renewable energy resources, some of the best onshore wine in the world, some of the best sunshine in Canada, and I think we’ve got lots of natural advantages.”
