Farmers from Southern Ontario are sending hay shipments to their agricultural friends in Saskatchewan to help them feed livestock. This comes after a summer drought that left the province with decreased crop production. Many farmers in Western Canada say they do not have enough hay to last the winter.
A non-profit organization called Mennonite Disaster Services Canada has begun shipping donations to the West since the Fall. Also, the Canadian Federation of Agriculture has started to do the same and launched its initiative earlier this year. According to the organization, recipients of the MDS are not picked based on religious affiliation.
MDS Canada’s Ontario unit secretary, Lester Weber said “we’re helping our brothers and sisters that are suffering out there,… We felt this was one way that we could help them back as they helped us.”
