Major League Baseball clubs broke the record for the total amount of money spent in one day for player salaries. On Wednesday, all the teams combined spent a total of US$1.4 billion in salaries before getting locked out. The league locked out players after following the 11:59 p.m. expiration of the sport’s collective bargaining agreement.
There were a total of six nine-figure contracts that were handed out on Wednesday. The Texas Rangers purchased Corey Seager for $325 million over 10 years and infielder Marcus Semien for $175 million over seven years. The Detroit Tigers picked up infielder Javier Baez for $140 million over six years.
The New York Mets bought ace Max Scherzer for a $130 million three-year deal. The Toronto Blue Jays contributed to the money spent by acquiring right-hander Kevin Gausman for $110 million over five years. Lastly, the Twins picked up centre fielder Bryon Buxton for a $100 million seven-year contract. Yesterday was the first time MLB teams combined to spend over $1 billion in a single day.
