Bianca Andreescu the Canadian tennis star will be taking a mental break from tennis and sit out for the Australian Open. Andreescu explained that she wants to “reset, recover, and grow” after a difficult two years which included contracting COVID-19. From Mississauga, Ontario, the 21-year-old posted on Twitter that she has been impacted mentally and physically by “multiple weeks in isolation quarantining”.

The 2019 U.S. Open champion said “a lot of days, I did not feel myself, especially while I was training and/or playing matches. I felt like I was carrying the world on my shoulders,… I could not detach myself from everything that was going on off the court; was feeling the collective sadness and turmoil around and it took its toll on me.”

Andreescu isn’t the first athlete who has felt the need to take time off from competition and recollect themselves mentally. Naomi Osaka, a four-time major title winner and former No. 1-ranked player in tennis took a break in May. Osaka pulled out of the French Open after her loss at the U.S Open in September and sat out the remainder of the season.
