The National Hockey League has suspended Toronto Maple Leaf’s player Jason Spezza six games for a kneeing penalty on Monday’s match. Spezza hit Pionk in the head with his knee during a 6-3 loss in Winnipeg in the third period. It happened as the Jets defenceman attempted to clear the puck away with his hand.
Spezza did not receive a penalty on the play but the Jets say Pionk was placed in concussion protocol after the hit. On Tuesday Spezza had an in-person hearing with the league which decided what actions should be taken. The league had a video explaining the suspension and the NHL’s department of player safety called the hit “reckless and retaliatory.”
Spezza must forfeit US$22,500 for his salary. Pink also received a two-game suspension on Monday for a knee on knee-on-knee hit with Maple Leaf’s defenceman Rasmus Sandin. During the game, no penalty was called. Now the Leafs added Sandin and Mitch Marner to the injured reserve list. The team recalled forward Alex Steeves and defenceman Alex Biega from the Toronto Marlies.
