On Sunday, Sri Lankan authorities presented what they said is the world’s largest natural corundum blue sapphire. The gem weighs 310 kilograms and was discovered in a gem pit three months ago. Gemologists in the local area who have examined the sapphire consider it as one of the rarest gems in the world due to its weight.
International organizations have not yet examined or certified the precious stone. It was placed on display at the home of one of the gem pit owners in Horana. Before its unveiling, a group of Buddhist monks chanted blessings towards the stone. The area where the stone was found is the gem-rich Ratnapura area. Local people have previously found the world’s largest star sapphire cluster in a backyard.
Ratnapura is considered the gem capital of Sri Lanka, which is a leading exporter of sapphires and other precious gems. Last year alone, the country earned around half a billion dollars through the export of gems.
