Residents and businesses across Ontario will face new restrictions Wednesday to slow the spread of COVID-19. Premier Doug Ford announced on Monday the restrictions will take into effect at 12:01 a.m. on January 5. The new restrictions are similar to returning to Step Two of the province’s reopening plan.
The restrictions include the closure of indoor dining, food courts, gyms, and theatres, as well as lower capacity limits in most other settings. The majority of personal care services will be allowed to operate at 50 per cent capacity. Specific settings such as saunas and steam rooms will have to be closed.
Social gatherings are limited to five people indoors and ten people outdoors. Christine Eliiot’s office explained that “While Delta’s severity required a focus on our ICU admissions, Omicron has resulted in a sudden and significant increase in hospital admissions, as well as a recent increase in staffing challenges in many critical sectors due to the rapid rise in Omicron exposures,”
