An Australian judge has just restored the tennis star’s visa and released him from his Melbourne hotel quarantine. Novak Djokovic’s visa was cancelled after his arrival last week because he is unvaccinated. Djokovic was ordered to be released from the hotel only 3o minutes after the decision was made.
Government lawyer Christopher Tran told the judge that the minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services, and Multicultural Affairs, Alex Hawke, “will consider whether to exercise a personal power of cancellation.” This means Djokovic can still be deported and there’s a chance he could miss the Australian Open, which starts on January 17.
Djokovic’s visa was cancelled late Wednesday when he arrived in Melbourne because officials said he didn’t meet the criteria for an exemption from the COVID-19 vaccine. Djokovic argued he did not need proof of vaccinations because there is evidence that he was infected with the coronavirus last month.
