Novak Djokovic returned to his home country on Monday and will not be able to defend his Australian Open title. He is also faced with a new predicament as Djokovic may be barred from the French Open this year if he’s still not vaccinated against COVID-19. The plane carrying the No. 1-ranked player in tennis landed in Serbia, putting an end to this confusing first chapter of pandemic tennis.
Djokovic was greeted with a handful of fans waving the Serbian flag at Belgrade’s airport. Djokovic is almost seen as an icon in Servia, and many residents felt he was treated poorly by Australia. The tennis star’s drama may not be over yet as he may be barred from playing in this year’s French Open.
Under a new law, the country intends to exclude the unvaccinated from stadiums and other public spaces. The Grand Slam tournament is scheduled in late May, so a lot can change from now until then. A member of the French Parliament, Christophe Castaner, said the new law will apply to anyone who wants to participate in the French Open.
