It has only been less than 6-months since the end of the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Games and now the Beijing Games are open. The Chinese President Xi Jinping declared the Olympic Winter Games to start on Friday. This was announced during a subdued opening ceremony.
Before declaring the Games open, International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach wished all attendees and viewers a happy Lunar New Year. Bach stated “This year of the tiger is also an Olympic year… Both the year of the tiger and the Olympic year stand for ambition, courage, and strength. Today, thanks to this ambition, China is a winter sports country.”
Bach explained that China now has more than 2,000 ice rinks and ski resorts and roughly 300 million Chinese residents participate in these sports. During the opening ceremony, six former Olympic medallists from China carried the Olympic flag into the National stadium. At that time a children’s choir sang the Olympic anthem in Greek having practiced for three months.
