A team of four Canadian athletes won a historic medal in mixed team ski jumping at the Beijing Olympics on Monday. Alexandria Loutitt, Mathew Soukup, Abigail Strate and Mackenzie Boyd-Clowes won the bronze in the first-ever mixed team event at an Olympic Games. Slovenia took home the gold medal after scoring 1001.5 total points. The Russian Olympic Committee won bronze with 890.3 points and the Canadians generated 844,6 points.
This Canadian team was not considered medal contenders in this event, but after Germany was disqualified before the final, the Canadians took advantage. Germany has won four consecutive world championships but was disqualified before the final because Katharina Althaus had a suit violation.
Japan, Austria, and Norway were all disqualified for the complex rule that links suits and skis to bodyweight. This is so any attempt to remove any advantage that can be gained by athletes being lighter. Ski jumping has been in the Olympics since 1924, however women got their own event in 2014. Mixed team events have been active in world championship events since 2013.
