Researchers have recorded the world’s largest rogue wave in the waters off of Ucluelet, British Colombia. The giant wave reached heights of 17.6 meters. That’s nearly the height of a 4 storey-building.
The wave measured almost three times the height of surrounding waves. Rogue waves like this one are defined by having a height more than twice that of surrounding waves.
Also known as freak and/or killer waves, these types of waves tend to occur unexpectedly and carry tremendous force that make them especially dangerous. These characteristics make them likely to knock containers from transport ships, making them a big concern for international shipping logistics.
