Over 7.5 million vehicle owners in Ontario could be eligible for a refund if this new legislation passes. Ontario plans to scrap the vehicle licence plate renewal fees and the requirements to have a licence plate sticker effective March 13. Premier Doug Ford spoke at a news conference on Tuesday morning in Richmond Hill.
At the conference, the premier said the government will be introducing red tape legislation that will allow Ontario to issue refunds to people who have renewed their licence plate since March 2020. The change will apply to passenger vehicles, light-duty trucks, motorcycles and mopeds. As of right now, renewal fees are at $120 a year for passenger vehicles in southern Ontario. It is $60 in the North.
This announcement comes just over three months before the provincial election. Ford said the move signifies 1 billion going back into the economy and will benefit the province. The cuts will cost the province $1.1 billion a year in lost revenue. Ford explained that with the cost of living going up, his government is trying to reduce the burden.
