    Scientists Believe Rocket Hardware Hit the Moon, But There’s no Proof

    Scientists were tracking a four-ton discarded rocket that they believe crashed into the moon at 9,300 kilometres per hour. The astronomers said there is no proof yet of the impact because it happened on the dark side of the moon. The astronomers said the space junk had been flying through space for years.

    Using orbital calculations on speed and trajectory and data from Earth-based telescopes there were able to estimate the crash. It predicted that the old rocket crashed into a moon crater on Friday at 7:25 a.m. EST. Scientists expected the rocket to create a crater approximately 10 to 20 metres across.

    To know exactly where the rocket crashed, astronomers will have to use satellite images. However, NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and India’s Chandrayaan-2 were not in a position to watch the impact. Those two satellites both orbit the moon on a regular basis.
