As the price of gas continues to climb, one electric vehicle owner said fuel costs are at least one-fifth of a gas-powered vehicle. Ontario’s Public Utilities Board posted record-high prices for gasoline and diesel on Friday. The current price of gas across the island of Newfoundland is above $1.90 per litre.
An electric vehicle advocate and co-founder of Drive Electric NL, Joe Butler said now “it is time to step back and make some serious plans,… I can predict roughly what my fuel will be,… And currently, it’s probably one-fifth or one-sixth of the cost if I had gasoline for the equivalent car.” He explained that while EVs may be more expensive than gas-powered cars there are still options to buy it second-hand at a discounted price.
Butler said there are virtually no drawbacks to purchasing an electric vehicle. Butler said he has been able to go on long-distance trips and pull his trailer with his electric vehicles. For Butler, the benefits of driving electric is both environmental and economical.
