In today’s world, nickel, cobalt, lithium, and platinum are considered ‘critical minerals’ as they are used in EV batteries, smartphones, and laptops. Ontario’s Premier Doug Ford unveiled a strategy for the province to capitalize on the growing global demand for minerals that are crucial to technologies. CBC News received an advanced copy of the strategy from the government to be publicly released.
The four critical minerals previously mentioned are already worth a $3.5 billion-a-year industry in Ontario. They’re considered critical since they have an essential role in the production of specialized technologies. The supply chain of these minerals is also a lot more volatile putting them at higher risk than other mining sectors.
So far, China, Russia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo are the biggest global sources of a variety of critical minerals. The Ford government wants the province to be in a position where is a reliable supplier of critical minerals.
