The Ontario government plans to use the revenue to subsidize electricity prices for residents. The proposed plan would be to sell “clean energy credits” to companies that want to lower their carbon footprint. However, some environmental groups say the move would do nothing to reduce Ontario’s carbon dioxide emissions.
Clean energy credits are very similar to carbon offset schemes, usually offered by airlines to passengers who want to pay extra to compensate for the emissions produced by the flight. The government’s goal is to create a market for clean energy credits paired with Ontario’s electricity generating system. That system is currently 94 per cent emission-free.
This proposal would allow businesses to buy credits voluntarily and count them as a way of reducing their greenhouse gas emissions. Many environmentalists are skeptical because this move doesn’t actually cut emissions or make the province’s electricity system any greener.
