Starting today, face masks will not be required anymore in schools, retail settings, and most other indoor public spaces. People will still be required to wear face masks in public transit, health-care facilities, and long-term care homes. The change in mandates comes a few weeks after the province lifted proof-of-vaccination rules and capacity limits.
Top health officials and provincial politicians have said public health indicators have improved enough to remove the mask rule. This rule has been lifted in other jurisdictions across Canada and in other parts of the world. Ontario’s Premier Doug Ford said he would keep wearing a mask in the provincial legislature “for the first few days.”
Dr. Peter Juni, the head of Ontario’s COVID-19 advisory table, is still encouraging people to keep wearing masks in busy indoor environments. Juni said “It’s not black or white … as long as we take it slow gradually, we should be OK,… It’s just not pretending it’s over, ‘There’s a light switch and tomorrow we go back to pre-pandemic.’ We’re not.”
