At the end of the 2022 school year, graduates from certain universities will get a chance to walk across the stage at their convocation ceremonies. Daniella Okezie has been practicing her strut to mark the completion of the bachelor’s program she finished two years ago. As she experienced very anticlimactic graduation in 2020, she’s been eager to celebrate in person.
In an interview, she explained, “It’s like a burden or something has lifted off my chest, like I can finally commemorate all the work that I put in, … It might not be a big deal to a lot of people, but it just feels like that was stolen from us.”
Many universities across the country are planning for in-person convocation ceremonies this year after a very long hiatus due to the pandemic. Some of the schools are inviting graduates from 2020 and 2021 who missed out on the celebration to attend the event. For some the opportunity to pick up a diploma in person makes it feel like all their hard work has paid off.
