The Toronto Zoo has shut down its aviaries to protect its birds from an avian flu that has been detected in Southern Ontario and Atlantic provinces. The zoo confirmed the news on Tuesday and said “your Toronto Zoo is committed to the health and safety of the animals in out care,”
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency confirmed on Monday that a highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of avian flu was found in poultry in southern Ontario. The agency explained the farm is under a strict quarantine, and the CFIA is establishing movement controls and recommending higher biosecurity at nearby farms.
The Toronto Zoo said “we are taking proactive steps to protect our birds from Avian Influenza which has been confirmed in a wild bird in southern Ontario. By limiting access to the aviaries to only Zoo staff, we protect them from any contamination that may come from outside of the Zoo.”
