George Miller ended his 68-year career in piloting at the same airport where it all started. Miller made his final landing in his 1940s-era Ryan Navion plane at the Miramichi-Chatham Airport and one of the employees said “nobody’s flown that low at this airport in 20 years.” His plane is an unpainted silver colour and under the New Brunswick’s blazing sun, the reflection stung people’s eyes.
Any aircraft fanatics would easily recognize the Navion’s fighter plan lineage. It was originally designed by the same company that built the well-known Second World War P-51 Mustang. To other people, the plane has a 1950s sci-fi movie spaceship aesthetic because of its chrome looking finish.
They don’t construct planes like this anymore and this one or its pilot will never fly again. After his final flight Miller said “I just love that airplane, … And I know that it’ll be hard to finally take the last look at it, … It’s a real gut-wrencher to give it up.”
