Doug Ford is holding a news conference a day after he won a second majority government. Ford’s journey to winning this election began on St. Patrick’s Day in 2020 when he declared a state of emergency for the pandemic. Until that moment, Ford was so unpopular that he got booed at the Toronto Raptors victory parade.
A key factor in his government winning majority was the image Ford cultivated in 200-plus news conferences during the first year of the pandemic. Ford was able to use those appearances to revamp his reputation and as a result his approval rating went up.
Though the government’s response to the pandemic was flawed, Ford managed to capitalize on Ontarians who were tired of restrictions and the pandemic. That’s when Ford used messages such as “Get It Done” to resonate with people alike. It’s very rare for a premier who forms a majority in his first election to get an even bigger majority in the second election.
