On Tuesday, the federal government in Canada is expected to announce an end to the COVID-19 vaccine mandates for domestic and international travel. The government could reinstate the vaccine requirement if another new variant of the virus appears. This information was from sources with direct knowledge of the decision who spoke with CBC News with the condition of anonymity.

Vaccine mandates for travel have been in effect in Canada since October 30, 2021. As mandates originally rolled in, travellers had a one-month grace period where they could provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test instead. The government has been pressured by other parties and industry organizations to ease the mandates.

Last week, the federal government said that it was suspending random COVID-19 testing at airports. At that time the Transport Minister said Ottawa was taking measures to address airport congestion.
