    In the east coast of Canada, a major scientific field study of marine fog is about to commence. Fog can only be predicted a few hours in advance because we do not understand what causes it yet. The research is being funded by the U.S. Department of Defense and hopes to better predict one of the most unpredictable weather phenomena.

    Fog has the potential to ruin visibility everywhere from harbours to highways and airports. It can even interfere with weapons systems. However, it is not deeply understood how it’s created, which is the reason fog can only be predicted a few hours in advance. 

    Ismail Gultepe, a research scientist from the Department of Environment and Climate Change Canada said “prediction is critical because every year in Canada approximately 50 to 60 people die because of the visibility for fog-related issues,”
