Due to the pandemic, it has been three years since the annual summer premier’s gathering was held in person. As the Council of the Federation gathers once more, some of Canada’s premiers are packing a lot of familiar baggage. Especially when it comes down to their demands of the federal government.
Earlier in the pandemic, the group would meet weekly or biweekly to discuss issues in the country. Now premiers in Canada are feeling “ghosted” by Ottawa, said B.C. Premier John Horgan, the chair and host of this year’s gathering. The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, and it is unclear what might be discussed.
Many people believe that health care will be a major topic of discussion. Canadian Medical Association president Katharine Smart said “when you look at our health-care system compared to other, comparable countries, it’s been deterioration in terms of quality of care and the timeliness of care over a long period of time,”
