Astronomers using a Canadian telescope found a signal consisting of fast bursts of radio waves in a clear pattern from deep space. Researchers believe it could be used to measure the expansion of the universe in the future. A special radio telescope in British Columbia detected the “heartbeat” signal.
It is described in a new paper published Wednesday in the journal Nature, where they explain this phenomenon is called a fast radio burst (FRBs). FRB’s happen suddenly and bursts strong consistent radio waves from space that have no clear source but are detectable.
Most FRBs last only a couple of milliseconds, however, this new signal can persist for up to three seconds at a time. Astronomers labelled it FRB 20191221A realized it emits bursts of radio waves that repeat every 0.2 seconds in an obvious pattern.
