After a pandemic induced break, Toronto’s annual race the Honda Indy is back to the streets this weekend. Among the drivers in the race, Devlin DeFrancesco is looking to honour the hospital that brought him into the world. The 22-year-old rookie is ranked 22nd and is making his Honda Indy debut.

The rookie’s slogan is “born fast” and it’s a literal statement because he was born 15 weeks premature. At an event on Thursday at Toronto’s Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, DeFrancesco praised the medical team that saved him as a newborn.

At the event he said “definitely extremely lucky and fortunate to have had the team at Sunnybrook around me, because without them, I most likely wouldn’t have been here,” As a premature baby, he had a collapsed lung, serious brain bleed, and weighed only one pound.
