Two astronauts, one European and one Russian will put on a white spacesuit and exit the International Space Station for a spacewalk. This will happen on Thursday, and will mark the first time in more than 20 years such a joint endeavor has taken place.
The European Space Agency will send Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti with the Russian cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev. The pair are scheduled to exit the ISS at 10 a.m. and will spend roughly 7 hours to install a 36-foot-long new robotic arm.
Spacewalks are a common occurrence on the ISS, but it usually involves two Americans or Europeans, an American and a European, or two Russians working together. The last time a Russian cosmonaut and a European astronaut left the ISS together was back in April 1999.
