According to a professor of mechanical engineering at Ontario Tech University, Toronto Harbour is missing out on an emerging renewable energy source. The emerging technology is known as floating solar panels. The professor named Ibrahim Dincer proposed a zero-emissions alternative to Toronto’s ferry fleet that would see new electric boats.
The electric boats will be able to draw power from a large floating solar panel near the shore of Lake Ontario. Even thought Toronto has a total of four ferries in its fleet, electrical replacements will not make a huge difference in reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. Dincer said the point is to provide people with an attainable demonstration of how it can be achieved.
Floating solar panels are designed to cover the water’s surface, supporting a series of reflective blue panels atop a buoyant base. A professor at Himachel Pradesh University in India said the technology has “grown exponentially — very rapidly,”
