Earthquake Near Alaska Causes Small Tsunami

A powerful earthquake jolt registered off the southern coast of Alaska late Tuesday. While the region is sparsely populated, some residents briefly fled to higher ground over fears of a tsunami. 

Although there was a tsunami warning, it was canceled due to no reports of damage in the Alaska Peninsula after the magnitude 7.8 quake produced a wave of less than a foot (30 centimetres).

The earthquake struck Tuesday at 10:12 p.m. local time and was centred in waters 65 miles (105 kilometres) south-southeast of the little community of Perryville
