Even though the excitement from the recent Summer Olympics has barely settled, a reminder came today that the next Olympic event is fast approaching. The opening ceremonies for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics are scheduled 100 days from now. These games will share some similarities to what happened in Tokyo as there is still the presence of COVID-19.

COVID-19 restrictions and mandates will be a constant theme as nations want to keep their athletes and people safe. Another similarity to Tokyo is that athletes will be competing after undergoing severe changes to their training, travel, and overall preparation. This is because the pandemic will limit them from what they would normally do.

The Winter Olympics will commence February 4, only six months after the closing ceremony for the Summer Olympics. David Shoemaker, the Canadian Olympic Committee CEO, said “This is a very, very quick turnaround for us… That’s by and large behind the scenes but it also means that there’s a group of athletes who are qualifying for the Games that still have their Olympic dreams.”
