On Friday, Amazon announced that it would be purchasing the vacuum cleaner maker iRobot for roughly US$1.7 billion. This is another company to add to Amazon’s collection of smart home appliances.

iRobot sells its products worldwide and is known for the circular-shaped Roomba vacuum. It will now join voice assistant Alexa, the Astro robot and ring security cameras and others in the list of smart home appliances. Amazon is looking to own part of the home space through services and accelerate its growth beyond retail.

Amazon’s Astro robot was unveiled last year at an introductory price of $1,000. It helps with tasks like setting an alarm but has had a limited rollout as it received a lacklustre response.
