Researchers from Calgary have created a human-like robot that will assist rescue efforts during disasters.  The robot is a man’s height with a space-age helmet for a head, working arms and legs and interchangeable hands. The design looks like a cross between RoboCop and a Transformer.

Alejandro Ramirez-Serrano has been working on the robot for the last seven years in the robotarium lab at the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary. He said “We’re trying to enable the robot to actually perceive and understand the intent of the mission,”

Ramirez-Serrano hopes it will become a tool to help first responders with disasters such as the collapse of a building. The goal is to have a search-and-rescue robot, which is faster than humans, to work in confined spaces and, in the most challenging circumstances.
