As a man heard a commotion inside his Aspen home, where he was staying with his children on Friday morning, he automatically knew something was wrong.

Dave Chernosky spoke to CNN to tell his story. “I laid in bed thinking, I really hope this isn’t a bear, I figured it probably was, but I was sure hoping for something else once I got into the kitchen.” Dave encountered the bear in the kitchen and luckily was able to use the kitchen island between them, where he then tried to trick the bear into his garage. But the moment he hit the garage door opener, the bear got scared and ran back into the house, where Dave encountered it face to face.

“We looked at each other, and he just smacked me in the side of the head and spun me around and got me again on the back,” Chernosky said. “I literally heard it crack on my head. A bear paw is not soft and cushy.” Dave explained.

He was hurt and bleeding, but he managed to crawl away and yell at him to leave. Luckily the bear decided to go, allowing Dave to call for help.
