Canadian speed skater claimed a silver medal in a 1,000 metre race, and St.John’s rink took the curling bronze. Laurent Dubreuil captured Canada’s 24th medal of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics on Friday. He won the silver medal in the men’s 1,000m. In the 500m event, he missed the podium by just three-hundredths of a second.

After the race, DDubreuil told CBC Sports’ Anastasia Bucsis “I was in the shape of my life, and I just had a bad day six days ago,” He won Canada’s third-ever silver medal in the men’s event, after Denny Morrison in the 2014 Games, and Gaétan Boucher in 1980. Skater Connor Howe from Canmore, Alta., finished in 12th place, and Antoine Gélinas-Beaulieu of Sherbrook, Quebec, finished 22nd.

Canada also beat the United States 8-5 to win the bronze-medal match. Brad Gushue’s from St.John’s stole two in the ninth end, before the Americans ran out of rocks in the 10th. With the two victories, Canada surpassed the 22-medal projection released by Nielsen’s Gracenote’s before the Games.
