Canada’s men’s soccer team is one step closer to the World Cup after a win against El Salvador. The match happened Wednesday evening and the Canadian men managed to shut them out 2-0. Captain Atiba Hutchinson, almost 39-years-old, and young star Jonathon David scored the two goals that solidified the win.

Before the match, Coach John Herdman told his players there’s “a whole country behind you now… So when it gets tough out there, just know that people are there, And keep pushing through, because there’s 30-odd million back home waiting to go to Qatar. And never forget that,”

After the Canadian women won Olympic gold, the fan base for Canadian soccer has grown substantially. With only three games to go, Canada sits in first place with a 4- point lead over Mexico and the United States. Fourth and fifth place are Panama and Costa Rica respectively.  By the end of March, the top three countries in the group will represent North and Central America and the Caribbean in Qatar.
