37-year old Eric Staal leads the way with world junior’s star McTavish offering fresh legs to the Canadian roster. The last time Eric Staal was in the Olympics was twelve years ago winning the gold medal in Vancouver. Now he is set to lead a group of Canadian men into Beijing for the tournament that begins February 9.

The NHL announced in December that it would pull its players from the Olympics due to a disrupted NHL season. Rising COVID-19 cases among players in the league have resulted in game delays. Staal is the likely candidate for the team captain of the 25-player roster.

Staal is a free agent and has been working himself into game shape on a professional tryout with the American Hockey League’s Iowa Wild. He has played over 1,400 career games in the NHL and won a Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes. Other former NHL players will be on the roster including David Desharnais, Daniel Winnik, Josh Ho-Sang, and more.
